Most tour groups never reach it, so the tomb road is walked in near silence; several sarcophagi still carry carved fines against tomb reuse, worth hunting for among the inscriptions.

Getting there: It lines the old road running north from the Byzantine gate at the far end of Hierapolis, about twenty minutes on the level from the theatre, or straight in from the north entrance car park.
Best time: The first hour after the North Gate opens; there is almost no shade once the sun is up
Access: Unpaved tracks and grass between the tombs, broadly level but uneven, with no level entry into any tomb interior; the only water and toilets are back at the North Gate.
Last entry: Inside the ticketed park, so it clears with the site in the evening and considerably earlier in winter.
