Ninety seconds on Catedral de Ancud
Half a century lay between the dynamite and the finished church. Work on the replacement began in earnest in 2012 and ended in 2014, so a diocese founded in 1840 worships in a building barely a decade old.
Its predecessor, reinforced with railway rails, took several days of dynamite to bring down. The present church is built entirely of timber and follows the type of the island's heritage wooden churches, a plain successor to the eclectic stone building with a dome, three naves and a white marble altar. Facing it, the Plaza de Armas carries sculptures from Chilote mythology, the Trauco, the Invunche and the Pincoya among them.
