Things to do in Bergen

Norway's second city, wrapped around a harbour and hemmed in by seven mountains, and the usual place a fjord trip begins or ends. It was a Hanseatic trading port for four centuries and the old wharf at Bryggen still holds the line of gabled wooden warehouses that made it. Rain falls here on roughly two days in three, which is why every shop sells waterproofs and nobody bothers with umbrellas.

    Free to wander and far better in the back passages than along the photographed front row; the wooden galleries lean and the boards are uneven, and early morning is the only time it is empty.

  2. Bergen Fish Market

    Market · 1 hr

    The outdoor stalls are a summer act priced for cruise traffic; the glass-fronted Mathallen alongside trades all year and is where the fishmongers actually keep their counters.

  3. Fløibanen

    Funicular · 1.5 hr

    Runs all year and takes about eight minutes, so treat the top as a walk rather than a viewpoint; queues build with the cruise ships around midday, and walking back down through the woods is free.
