Ninety seconds on Sinaia Casino
Sinaia Casino lets you walk through the rooms where the mountain resort once gambled, from the mirrored roulette hall to the theatre with its famous acoustics.
The Mirror Hall is the great hall of the building, lit by crystal chandeliers. Thirteen roulette tables once stood on its floor. The building no longer hosts gambling.
Beside it, the Oval Hall is a curved room of 336 square metres. The casino stands on the site of the Ghica villa, the first villa in the resort, which gave the park around it its name.
The theatre is a hall of 224 square metres that seats 400 and is known for its acoustics. It keeps the piano that George Enescu played at the building's opening.
The art gallery is a 160 square metre hall hung with the Maria and Augustin Costinescu collection of paintings and drawings. Outside, the front stands behind a fountain and flower beds in Dimitrie Ghica Park, and the best view of it is from the fountain.
From the Royal Café entrance, tickets are sold until fifteen minutes before each tour. You can also buy them online on the casino's website and skip the queue at the desk.
Choose between two tickets. The full tour covers the main and secondary floors, meaning the casino rooms and the art gallery, while the Royal Gallery ticket covers the secondary floor alone. Take the full tour unless you are short of time.
A guide leads each group through the halls, so stay with yours from room to room. Afterwards, walk on through Dimitrie Ghica Park, which also holds a small museum.
Every visit inside is with a guide, so join a scheduled group or book a private tour for three or more people. Groups of more than ten have their own ticket, arranged at the Royal Café desk or on the casino's website.
Ask the guide at the start whether you may photograph the rooms. If you also plan to see Știrbey Castle, ask for the combined ticket that covers both.
Students, pupils and pensioners have a reduced ticket, so say so at the desk. Keep a hand on your bag in town, as in any busy resort.
