Ninety seconds on Hallgrímskirkja
Take the lift up the tower for the view that shows how Reykjavík fits together: coloured roofs, Harpa on the shore and Esja across the bay. Then come down and sit under the organ.
Buy the tower ticket in the church shop, on the left as you enter the lobby. Tickets are sold on the day only, never in advance, and each one is good for a single ride up. From the deck you look straight down Skólavörðustígur to the old centre.
Back inside, the Klais organ fills the west end of the nave. It stands 15 metres high with 5,275 pipes, the largest organ in Iceland. Organ concerts and noon sessions of organ music are listed on the church's schedule, and concert tickets are sold separately from tower tickets.
