Ninety seconds on Niagara Falls of Montenegro
In spring, or the day after heavy rain, water spills over the whole weir and the drive is worth it. In a dry August the riverside restaurant is the reason to come, not the falls.
From the road by the Niagara restaurant, iron stairs drop to the river. Above the weir the Cijevna runs flat and green; below it the water breaks over rocky steps into pools and small rapids, widest at the main fall, with side streams along the far bank. A wooden bridge links the two sides. In hot months there are lawns and small pebble beaches, and the low water turns the pools into a swimming spot. Across the river run the vineyards of the Plantaža winery. The restaurant is open all year and cooks river trout and lake carp, and a long lunch there is most of the afternoon.
