Ninety seconds on Alcazaba of Málaga
Starting at the top makes the Alcazaba, Málaga's Moorish fortress, an easy visit. The lift lands you in palace courtyards that stay cool on a hot day, and from there you walk downhill all the way to the Roman Theatre.
Where the lift comes out, the Nasrid palace has two courtyards. The Patio de los Naranjos is built round two small pools, and in the Patio de la Alberca a long pool runs between myrtle hedges.
Rooms along the palace's north side hold a display of Moorish pottery found in the fortress and in digs around the city. Walk out onto the walls here: on the town side you look down over the old centre, and on the sea side over the whole bay.
Then follow the path downhill through the Plaza de Armas garden, with its fountain and low hedges, and on through a series of old gateways to the street.
