Ninety seconds on Gibralfaro
Come up here to see the whole of Málaga below you. The castle stands 132 metres above the sea, higher than the Alcazaba, and from its walls you look down over the old town, the port and the bay.
Two rings of wall circle the hilltop, and parts of both are open to walk, with viewing platforms along them. The walkway along the top of the walls is narrow, so take it slowly.
Just inside the gate, the old powder store holds a small museum about the soldiers who guarded the castle. It starts with a large model of Moorish Málaga, then uniforms set out century by century, weapons and navigation instruments.
Between the walls, pines and cypresses shade courtyards with benches. The Airón well there is cut more than 40 metres into the rock.
Outside the gate, the Mirador de Gibralfaro has two terraces at different heights, open round the clock and free. Come back to them for sunset, after the castle has shut.
