Ninety seconds on King Nikola's Palace, Bar
Go now for the painted walls. The restoration that reopened the palace in July 2026 uncovered about 600 square metres of original wall painting, which no other former royal residence in Montenegro has kept.
This is a small royal compound, not one house. The Large Palace, flanked by two six-sided guard towers, holds the museum. The Small Palace, a court chapel and a glass winter garden, a gift from the Italian king, stand around a park of rare trees.
Inside, the collections run in order from prehistory to the early twentieth century: archaeology, old weapons and decorations, ethnology and art, with some original interiors partly restored. Climb to the upper floors for the painted walls found in the restoration, now shown as exhibits in their own right.
