Ninety seconds on Stari Bar (Old Bar)
Walk it all the way to the citadel at the top. That rampart is where the ruins make sense, with the aqueduct, the olive valley and the new town on the shore all laid out below.
Climbing the steep cobbled street to the gate is the first part of it, past craft workshops, mosques and stalls selling olive oil, olives and almonds. Just inside the entrance a small museum sets out the site. From there more than a dozen marked points of interest lead through roofless houses, a hammam, restored churches and the garden of the Omerbašić mosque, where old olive trees grow in strange shapes. Keep going to the citadel rampart: the arches of the aqueduct run below it, then a valley of olives, then the Adriatic. On Fridays the street outside fills with a market, and in July and August the Bar Chronicle festival stages performances inside the ruins.
