Ninety seconds on Ulcinj

The southernmost town in Montenegro, majority Albanian speaking, with an old town on a rock above the sea that spent the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as a corsair port. Below it the coast turns to sand: Velika Plaza runs for about 12 kilometres, and the Bojana river islands sit at the border with Albania. The season is longer here than anywhere further north and the water is warmer. It is about 45 minutes from Bar and a different country in feel from the bay.

  1. Ulcinj Old Town Bazaar

    Old Town · 1 hr

    Worth an hour for textiles and Ottoman-era crafts; the bazaar is compact and central.

  2. Velika Plaža

    Beach · 2.5 hr

    Twelve kilometres of fine grey-brown sand running southeast from Ulcinj to the Bojana delta, the longest beach on the Montenegrin coast. Shallow water, steady afternoon wind and a string of kite schools make it the country's kitesurfing shore; the town beach, Mala Plaza, is a separate small bay under Ulcinj old town.
