Things to do
6-
Church of St John the Baptist and St Bartholomew
The parish church above the market square, rebuilt in the seventeenth century with stucco vaults in the local Renaissance style. Its organ, finished in 1620, is one of the oldest working instruments in Poland and is played at summer concerts. The church is open to walk in outside service times.
-
Janowiec Castle
A large Renaissance castle on the far bank of the Vistula, partly roofed again after two centuries as a ruin, with an open-air museum of wooden manor buildings below it. A small ferry crosses from Kazimierz in a few minutes. The castle is ticketed, and the ferry runs only in the warm months.
-
Kazimierz Dolny Castle
The ruins of a fourteenth century castle on the slope above the town, with a round stone watchtower a short climb higher up. Both are reached on foot from the market square, and the top of the tower looks over the Vistula. The castle and tower share a ticket and open daily in the warm months.
-
Kazimierz Dolny Market Square
A sloping square with a wooden well in the middle, framed by the two Przybyła houses with their carved Renaissance facades of saints. Galleries, cafés and bakeries selling bread roosters, the local speciality, fill the arcaded houses around it. Summer weekends are packed, so early morning is the quiet time.
-
Korzeniowy Dół
A loess gorge on the edge of town where the walls rise several metres and the roots of old trees hang exposed above the path. A marked trail of about a kilometre runs along its floor, an easy walk from the centre. The floor turns to mud after rain, so solid shoes are needed.
-
Three Crosses Hill
A hill above the town crowned by three crosses raised in the early eighteenth century in memory of a plague. A steep path climbs from beside the parish church to a view over the roofs, the castle and the river. The path is ticketed in season and slippery after rain.
