Krutynia Kayak Route
A slow, clear river winding through forest and a chain of lakes, the best known kayak route in Masuria. The classic stretch from Krutyń village passes under overhanging alders and through a nature reserve. Rental outfits in Krutyń supply boats and return transport for routes of a few hours or several days. Summer weekends bring crowds on the water.

Lake Mikołajskie
The long narrow lake on which the town stands, a channel of water linking Śniardwy to the northern lakes. Tour boats run from the harbour quay through the summer, and a lakeside path leads past the moorings. The bridges and promenade are the centre of evening life. Swimming is safest at the guarded town beach.
-
Lake Śniardwy
The largest lake in Poland, a wide sheet of shallow water dotted with small islands just south of Mikołajki. It is open enough to feel like an inland sea, and summer sailing charters and day cruises leave from the town harbour. Wind builds fast across its surface and storms arrive with little warning. Charter skippers check the forecast before setting out.
-
Łuknajno
A shallow reed fringed lake east of town, protected as a biosphere reserve for its large colony of mute swans. Hundreds of birds gather here in summer during the moult. A wooden observation tower on the shore gives the view, reached by a lane and a short path from the village of Łuknajno. Binoculars help.
-
Ryn Castle
A square brick castle of the Teutonic Knights on a hill between two lakes in the small town of Ryn, now converted into a hotel and conference centre. The courtyard, the restored halls and a small display on the knights can be visited. It is a short drive north of Mikołajki. Tours of the interior run at set times.
-
Święta Lipka Basilica
A baroque pilgrimage church in a lakeside hamlet, its cream towers enclosed by an arcaded cloister. The richly painted interior holds an organ whose carved figures move when it is played. Short organ recitals take place several times a day in summer. The church remains a working shrine, so dress modestly and keep quiet during services.

Wolf's Lair
The ruins of Hitler's main military headquarters, hidden in the forest at Gierłoż, where a staff officer's bomb failed to kill him in July 1944. Dozens of shattered concrete bunkers, some with walls metres thick, lie among the trees. A marked route with information boards leads around the site. It is ticketed, and guides are available at the entrance.
