Things to do
7-
Czołpino Lighthouse
A brick lighthouse of 1875 standing on a wooded dune inside the national park, west of Lake Łebsko. A climb up the tower gives a view over the forest canopy to the sea and the shifting sands to the east. It is reached on foot or by bicycle from the hamlet of Czołpino. The gallery is open in season and ticketed.
-
Łącka Góra
The highest of the moving dunes, a bare ridge of pale sand that advances several metres a year and has buried the forest in its path. From the top the view spans the sea on one side and Lake Łebsko on the other. It lies a few kilometres inside the park from the Rąbka gate, reached on foot, by bicycle, electric cart or summer boat. Shoes fill with sand.
-
Lake Łebsko
A broad, shallow coastal lake separated from the sea by the dune belt, ringed with reeds and wet meadows. It draws large numbers of migrating geese, cranes and ducks in spring and autumn. Boats cross from Łeba to the dune landing in summer, and its open water is popular with kitesurfers. Wind can rise quickly on its exposed surface.
-
Museum of the Slovincian Village
An open air museum in the lakeside village of Kluki, preserving the thatched farmsteads of the Slovincians, a small Kashubian community that lived in the marshes around Lake Łebsko. Cottages are furnished as they were, with tools, boats and peat cutting gear. Craft demonstrations run in summer. It is ticketed and the approach road ends at the village.
-
Rocket Launch Site Museum
Concrete launch pads and bunkers hidden in the pines at Rąbka, where German engineers tested anti aircraft rockets during the Second World War. A small open air exhibition shows replica rockets and explains the programme. It sits on the path from the park gate to the dunes, so it makes a natural stop on the way. It is ticketed and open in season.
-
Rowokół
A forested hill rising above the flat country near Smołdzino, sacred to the pagan Slavs and later a sailors' landmark. A path climbs through beech woods to a steel viewing tower on the summit. From the top the view takes in Lake Gardno, the dunes and the open sea. The climb is short but steep in places.
-
Słowiński National Park
A coastal national park of shifting dunes, shallow lakes, peat bogs and pine forest stretching west from Łeba along the Baltic. Marked trails, bike paths and a boardwalk cover the main sights, and the beach runs unbroken for over thirty kilometres. Entry is ticketed at the park gates. Swimming is allowed only on guarded beaches near the towns.
