Ninety seconds on Gibbs Hill Lighthouse
If the outside gallery is the point, that is the part shut: the operator has the platform closed for works. What remains inside earns the stair in spring, when whales pass within sight of the tower.
Eight flights, each landing carrying a small exhibit on the building of the tower and on Bermuda around it, and the platforms exist so that the climb can be broken. What waits at the top is the reason the ticket costs almost nothing: a circular walkway looking north to the Royal Naval Dockyard and the Great Sound, over Hamilton in the distance, and south to open Atlantic. That walkway is the part currently shut for works, so the climb is worth checking on before it is made. Below, the former keeper's cottage holds a restaurant called The Dining Room, and there is a gift shop; both are free to walk into and neither requires the stair. Allow an hour for the tower, more if lunch is the plan.
