Ninety seconds on Calibishie

The name is Kalinago for a reef of nets, and the reef is the whole point of the place. It breaks the Atlantic apart offshore and leaves the water inside it flat, which happens almost nowhere else on this coast. This is the sandy corner of an island that mostly has none. Red sandstone cliffs stand over the shore at Pointe Baptiste, the beaches north of the village are golden, not black, and Douglas-Charles airport is fifteen minutes away, which makes it the practical base for the north east.

  1. Batibou Beach

    Beach · 2.5 hr

    A curved bay of pale sand backed by coconut palms, reached down a rough track that usually needs four wheel drive. It is the most photographed beach on Dominica and access is controlled by the landowner.

  2. Number 1 Beach

    Beach · 1.5 hr

    A sheltered strip of sand west of Batibou on the same stretch of north coast, quieter than its neighbour and easier to reach. The reef offshore keeps the swell down.

  3. Pointe Baptiste

    Waterfront · 1 hr

    The headland east of Calibishie village, with golden sand below the red cliffs and a view along the north coast. A small chocolate maker works on the estate above it.

  4. Red Rocks

    Viewpoint · 30 min

    A shelf of eroded red sandstone on the shore at Pointe Baptiste, cut into ridges and hollows by wind and sea. It is unlike anything else on an island built of grey volcanic rock.
