The climb is 1,350 steps up a wall with no shade on it, so the hour it is started decides how hard it is. First light, or the last hour before dark.

Visiting

The stairs start inside the old town and climb in long zigzags. The town drops away fast: within a few minutes the roofs are below and the bay is opening out to the west. Halfway up, the church of Our Lady of Health stands on its own terrace, and it is the natural place to stop. Above it the steps get rougher and the wall narrows until it reaches San Giovanni, which is a shell rather than a building. The view from the top is the one from the church, wider.
