Ninety seconds on Lovćen National Park and Mausoleum of Petar Petrović Njegoš
Two roads reach the car park and they are not the same day out: the Cetinje approach is ordinary, the Kotor serpentine is the drive worth planning around. Go on a clear morning or the terrace gives back nothing.
The staircase is the visit and it is worth knowing that before starting it. From the car park a tunnel leads into the rock and the steps climb inside the mountain, coming out at the platform. The chamber holds the seated figure under its gold vault and takes a few minutes; the terrace behind it is where people stay, because on a clear day the whole country is legible from it, the bay on one side and the lake on the other. Allow longer than the climb suggests for coming back down through the same tunnel behind everyone else.
