Things to do in Achill Island

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Achill Island

The largest island off Ireland, joined to Mayo by a bridge at Achill Sound, carrying five Blue Flag beaches, the highest sea cliffs in the country on the northern face of Croaghaun, and a deserted village of about a hundred stone houses on the slope of Slievemore. Most of it is blanket bog and the settlements are strung along the southern and western shores. Heinrich Böll wrote his Irish Journal from a cottage at Dugort and the island took the filming of The Banshees of Inisherin.

Things to do

5
  1. Croaghaun

    Viewpoint · 5 hr

A mountain of six hundred and eighty-eight metres whose northern face falls straight into the Atlantic as the third highest sea cliff in Europe, invisible from any road and reached only on foot from Keem. There is no path and the cliff edge is undercut.

  2. Deserted Village

    Ruins · 1.5 hr

About a hundred roofless stone houses in a line along the southern slope of Slievemore, occupied into the nineteenth century and used as booley huts for summer grazing after that. It is a short walk uphill from the road at Dugort with no fence and no fee.

  3. Keel Beach

    Beach · 2 hr

Three kilometres of sand in front of the island's main village, with a reliable beach break and the Cathedral Rocks and Minaun cliffs closing the eastern end. The surf school and the campsite both work from it.

  4. Keem Bay

    Beach · 2.5 hr

A horseshoe of white sand at the end of the island road, reached down a cliff-cut single track from Croaghaun, and once a basking shark fishery. Parking at the top is very limited and the road has passing places rather than two lanes.

  5. Kildavnet Tower

    Tower · 30 min

A fifteenth-century O'Malley tower house on the shore at Achill Sound, associated with the pirate queen Grace O'Malley, standing beside a graveyard that holds the Kirkintilloch fire victims of 1937. It is open and free.
