Hunt Museum
The eighteenth-century custom house holding the private collection of John and Gertrude Hunt, including a bronze horse attributed to Leonardo and a coin said to be one of the thirty pieces of silver. Objects are shown in drawers visitors open themselves.

King John's Castle
A Norman castle of about 1200 on the Shannon with drum towers and curtain walls that survived two sieges, built over pre-Norman houses now exposed under a glass floor in the courtyard. The wall walk looks straight down the river.

Lough Gur
A horseshoe lake south of the city ringed by six thousand years of settlement, including Grange stone circle, which is the largest in Ireland at forty-five metres across and built about 2200 BC. The interpretive centre sits on the shore.

Saint Mary's Cathedral
Founded in 1168 on the site of a Viking meeting place and the O'Brien palace, and the oldest building in the city still in daily use. Its medieval misericords are a complete set, the sole survivors in Ireland, and the carvings under the choir seats include a griffin and a wyvern.

Thomond Park
The home ground of Munster rugby, where the province beat the All Blacks in 1978, with a museum and a stadium tour that goes into the dressing rooms. Match days fill the city and the ground holds twenty-five thousand, and tickets go early in the European rounds.

Treaty Stone
A rough block of limestone on the Clare bank of the Shannon, said to be the stone the Treaty of Limerick was signed on in October 1691, ending the Williamite war. It faces the castle across the Thomond Bridge and takes five minutes on the riverside walk.
