Ninety seconds on Gusinje
The last town before the Albanian border, in a green basin at the foot of the Prokletije, with minarets, a few cafés and guesthouses that cater to walkers. It is a trailhead first. The Grebaje and Vusanje valleys open just south of town, the springs of Ali Pasha are a short drive away, and the walking crossing to Theth in Albania starts here. Carry a passport on any route that goes near the frontier ridge.
A glacial valley ringed by the pale walls of the Karanfili peaks, reached by road south of Gusinje. It is the easiest way into the heart of Prokletije: walk from the road end to high viewpoints in a morning, or climb toward the Karanfili with a guide. The Peaks of the Balkans route passes through the neighbouring Vusanje valley on its way into Albania.
