Things to do in Žabljak

The highest town in the Balkans at around 4,750 feet, and the gateway to Durmitor National Park. Black Lake sits fifteen minutes' walk from the centre, ringed by pines with the peaks above it, and the park holds eighteen glacial lakes and dozens of summits over 6,500 feet. The Tara canyon, the deepest in Europe, cuts along the northern edge and carries the rafting trade. Zabljak recorded the most overnight stays of any Montenegrin destination in 2025. Summer is for hiking and rafting, winter for skiing, and the roads in are slow in both.

Things to do

  1. Black Lake

    Park · 2 hr

Two glacial basins under the Durmitor massif, joined by a strait that dries through the season until the pair separate. A 3.6-kilometre circuit path rings the water, a flat half-hour walk in from Zabljak, with rowing boats for hire and cold, stony swimming in summer. Buy the park ticket at the approach booth.

  2. Bobotov Kuk

    Landmark · 8 hr

Durmitor's 2,523-metre summit, climbed most directly from the Sedlo pass in five to eight hours return. The final half hour is a narrow ledge on fixed cable, and snow holds on the upper route into early July. Start early; cloud builds on the massif through the afternoon.

  3. Đurđevića Tara Bridge

    Bridge · 1 hr

Five concrete arches carry the road across the Tara canyon 23 kilometres from Zabljak, about 170 metres above the river at the most photographed point in northern Montenegro. Walk to mid-span for the view down the gorge, and check the current works schedule before planning a crossing; the bridge has been under reconstruction with closures into late 2026.

Durmitor National Park: Come After the Snow Goes

Snow shuts the 76 km ring road every winter and it is ploughed open around the end of May, with the walking routes weeks behind. A practical guide to the plateau above Žabljak: the drive, the walks off it, the ticket sold at trailheads rather than a gate, and the bridge closure that has changed the way in.
