Bobotov Kuk
Parties turn back at the cabled section near the top, and that is the decision the day turns on. There is no spring on the route and nothing sells water up there, so the whole day's supply goes in the pack.

Đurđevića Tara Bridge
It is a photograph stop rather than a destination, and worth planning around rather than driving to: the bridge is shut to traffic and to walkers alike while the reconstruction runs.

Black Lake
Walk the loop anticlockwise and early. The far shore gives angles on Međed that the main beach never shows, and by midday in July and August the path is at its busiest.

Durmitor National Park
Eighteen glacial lakes and dozens of summits over 2,000 metres sit inside one UNESCO-listed park, with Žabljak on its eastern edge. Come between late June and September: before that, snow still closes the high passes. Buy the park ticket at the gate or the visitor centre, and start the long routes early, because afternoon storms build fast over the massif.

Nevidio Canyon
The name means the unseen, and the Komarnica river cut this gorge so narrow in places that the walls nearly close overhead; it was only descended end to end in 1965. The only way through is canyoning with a licensed guide, in a wetsuit and helmet, sliding and jumping into cold pools. Trips run in high summer when the water drops; book from Žabljak a few days ahead.

Prutaš
A tilted slab of rock that looks as if the mountain was folded like paper, reached on a half-day hike from the Durmitor Ring road near the Sedlo pass. The top looks straight down on the Škrka lakes. The path is steep but not technical; bring boots, water and a clear forecast, since the route has almost no shade.

Savin Kuk
Žabljak's ski area in winter and one of the most walkable Durmitor summits the rest of the year. The ski lifts start from the base above town, and the walk to the top crosses open limestone with the Black Lake below. Check whether a lift is running before counting on it; if not, give the climb most of a day.
