Piva Monastery
When the Mratinje dam flooded the Piva valley, the sixteenth-century monastery was taken apart and rebuilt stone by numbered stone above the new waterline, its frescoes moved with it, a relocation that ran from 1969 into the early 1980s. It stands a short drive south of Pluzine.

Piva Lake
A turquoise reservoir winding for kilometres between sheer walls, held back since the 1970s by a dam 220 metres high. The road north from Plužine follows it through dozens of rough, unlit rock tunnels, one of the country's great drives; take it slowly with headlights on. Kayak hire and boat trips run from the town in summer.

Tara River Canyon
Europe's deepest canyon, cut some 1,300 metres into the plateau, and the Tara is the river the rafts run through it. The water is white until about mid June and turns clear and gentle after that, so choose the month by the ride. The usual run ends at Šćepan Polje on the Bosnian border; carry a passport, and book with a camp that includes transfers.
