Things to do in Aus

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Aus

Winter frost and occasional snow reach this village on the escarpment, which is not what the rest of the country does. A German internment camp held prisoners here after the First World War and its foundations survive on the edge of town. West of here the land drops to the coastal plain and the restricted diamond area begins. The feral horses that live on that plain water at a borehole beside the road, and the light on the granite hills around the village is the other reason to stop.

  1. Garub

    Landmark · 2 hr

A borehole on the plain west of the village waters the feral horses that have lived out here for about a century, descended from stock left behind by war and by a private stud. A hide sits a short walk from the parking area. Numbers rise and fall sharply with drought and with predation.

  2. Klein-Aus Vista

    Hotel

A working farm on the hills above the village runs chalets, a campsite and a stone cabin set well away from everything else, with walking and mountain bike trails through the granite. The horses are twenty minutes down the road. It is the standard overnight stop between the canyon and the coast.
