Ninety seconds on Rundu

Set on a bank above the Okavango with Angola on the far side, this is the largest town in the northeast and a different country from the desert south: green, humid in season, and densely settled along the river. Woodcarving is the trade it is known for, sold from stalls along the main road. Most travellers pass through on the way east towards the Zambezi, and the reason to stop is the river itself and the living museum upstream of the town.

  1. Hakusembe River Lodge

    Hotel

    Chalets stand under mature trees on the Okavango bank a short drive upstream, with the water directly below the terraces and Angola opposite. Boat trips run at sunset for the birds and hippos. It is the usual overnight stop for anyone breaking the drive between Etosha and the Zambezi.

  2. Mbunza Living Museum

    Museum · 2.5 hr

    An open air museum on the riverbank west of the town presents Mbunza fishing, basketry, blacksmithing, music and dance, run and staffed by the surrounding community with the income going to it. Visits are guided and last a couple of hours. Traditional fish traps are demonstrated in the shallows.
