Ninety seconds on Epupa Falls

Makalani palms and baobabs line the Kunene where it breaks into channels and drops over a rock shelf, with Angola on the far bank. Himba settlements stand along the river on both sides of the border. Volume depends on rain far upstream, and the falls run hardest between about March and May. Camps sit on the bank above the main channel, the crocodiles are a genuine constraint on swimming, and the road in from Opuwo takes most of a day.

  1. Epupa Falls Lodge

    Hotel

    Rooms and camping sit directly on the bank a short walk above the main drop, close enough that the noise of the water carries through the night. Power runs on a generator and a solar bank. Guides are arranged here for visits to the Himba homesteads on the Namibian side.

  2. Epupa Falls Viewpoint

    Viewpoint · 1.5 hr

    A path climbs the ridge above the river to a line of baobabs growing straight out of the rock, and from there the whole spread of channels and drops is visible at once with Angola beyond. Sunset is the hour to be up there. The climb is short, unshaded and loose underfoot.
