Cheetah Conservation Fund
A research centre east of the town works on the conflict between farmers and cheetah, and its best known programme breeds Anatolian guarding dogs and places them with livestock herders. A museum, a model farm and resident cheetah that cannot be released are open to day visitors. Feeding runs happen in the afternoon.

Okonjima Nature Reserve
The AfriCat Foundation works from this reserve on leopard and cheetah, much of it collared and tracked, and guests join the tracking rather than watch from a fence. Rehabilitation of captured predators was the original purpose and research has taken over. Bookings are for at least a night.

Waterberg Plateau Park
Sandstone cliffs lift a wooded plateau a couple of hundred metres above the plain, and its isolation made it the place to relocate sable, roan and rhino when their numbers fell. Guided drives run on top and trails climb the escarpment. German forces defeated the Herero here in 1904, which began the genocide.

Waterberg Wilderness Lodge
A private reserve on the southwestern side of the plateau holds this lodge in a valley enclosed by red cliffs, with trails leading up from the door. Rock paintings and a spring lie within walking distance. It is quieter than the state camp on the eastern side and closer to the cliff walks.
