Ninety seconds on Maras

A plateau village above the Sacred Valley, known for the salt pans in the ravine below it: several thousand shallow pools fed by a saline spring, worked by the families who hold them by inheritance. Moray, the concentric Inca terraces sunk into a bowl in the plain, lies a short drive west at a similar height, and the two are almost always taken on one trip.

    Incan agricultural experimentation center consisting of four circular terraced depressions carved into a hillside. Each circle descends approximately 150 meters and may have been used to test crops at different microclimates.

    Pre-Columbian salt ponds fed by a saline spring, with approximately 3,000 evaporation pools terraced into a hillside near Maras village. The ponds have been in continuous use since Incan times and remain operated by local communities.
