A Quechua speaking island about three hours out from Puno, farmed in terraces and run by its own communal system rather than by the district office. Its knitted and woven textiles were listed by UNESCO in 2005, and the men knit in public while the women spin.

    A steep island of about two thousand Quechua speakers who run it collectively and knit the textiles UNESCO listed in 2005, the men working the needles and the women spinning. The path from the lower jetty climbs some five hundred steps to the plaza, and the crossing from Puno takes around three hours.
