Things to do

Cheb Castle
Built for Frederick Barbarossa, this castle above the Ohře keeps a black volcanic stone tower and a rare two-storey Romanesque chapel. The tower climb ends at a lookout over the roofs of the old town. From April to October it closes on Mondays outside July and August, and in winter it opens on weekends only.

Cheb Museum
Wallenstein, the imperial general, was murdered in 1634 in the Pachelbel House on the main square, which now holds the regional museum. Rooms trace the town and the surrounding region, and the room where he died is part of the route. It opens Wednesday to Sunday and has no wheelchair access.
-
Church of St Nicholas and St Elizabeth
Two tall pyramid spires, restored in 2008, mark the oldest church in town, a Romanesque and Gothic hall a block above the square. Steps in the south tower climb about 170 stairs to a viewing platform, the last stretch steep and spiral. The crypt holds a small exhibition, and tower entry is ticketed.

King George of Poděbrady Square
Sloping down from the town hall to the Špalíček, the main square is lined with gabled burgher houses in pastel colours and two fountains with statues of Roland and Hercules. Café tables spread along both sides in summer. The cobbles are steep and uneven, so flat shoes help.

Špalíček
Eleven narrow half-timbered houses stand back to back in a tight block at the lower end of the main square, with only slim alleys between them. The block grew from medieval market stalls into homes. A walk around all four sides shows the timber framing up close, and the alleys are free to wander.
