Things to do
7-
Černá hora
Above the spa village of Janské Lázně, this broad summit carries a transmitter, a lookout and the upper station of a cable car from the valley. Ski runs drop on several sides in winter, linked to the slopes of Pec under one lift pass. In summer the ridge path toward Pec crosses meadows and the Černohorská rašelina bog on a boardwalk. Snow often lingers here into April.
-
Elbe Spring
Marked by a stone well and a wall of town crests, the source of the Elbe sits on the open ridge meadow of the western Krkonoše. Most walkers come up from Špindlerův Mlýn through the Labský důl valley, passing the Elbe waterfall below Labská bouda. The route is long and steep in parts. The spring itself is often a trickle by late summer.
-
Krkonoše National Park
Dwarf pine, arctic tundra and glacial cirques make up the high ground of the Giant Mountains, protected on both sides of the Polish border. Marked trails cross the ridge from Pec to Špindlerův Mlýn and over into Poland. Walkers must stay on marked paths in the core zones. Fog and sudden storms reach the ridge in every month of the year.
-
Luční bouda
High on the bare plateau of Luční hora, this big mountain lodge is the highest in the country and brews its own beer. Walkers crossing the ridge between Sněžka and Špindlerův Mlýn stop here, about two hours on foot from Pec. Peat bogs and dwarf pine surround it. In cloud the plateau has few landmarks, so stay on the marked trail between the poles.
-
Obří důl
Carved by a glacier, this valley runs from the village to the foot of Sněžka between walls of scree and avalanche chutes. The blue trail passes an old chapel and the remains of mine workings before a steep climb to the Obří sedlo saddle. Allow about three hours up. In winter the upper section toward Obří sedlo closes because of avalanches.
-
Sněžka
Bare, windswept and often in cloud, the summit cone of the Krkonoše is split by the Polish border, with a chapel and an observatory on one side and a post office on the other. Walkers climb from Pec through Obří důl or along the ridge from Luční bouda. The cable car makes an easy descent. Weather turns fast up here, so a warm layer belongs in the pack even in August.
-
Sněžka Cable Car
Four seat cabins run in two sections from the edge of Pec to Růžová hora and on to the top of Sněžka. The upper section stops in high wind, and the line closes for maintenance in parts of spring and autumn, so check the day's status before planning around it. Bicycles are not carried. A new exhibition about the mountain opened at the lower station in 2026.
