Things to do

Church of the Transfiguration
Facing the town hall across the main square, the Gothic deanery church has net vaults over its nave and a tall tower with a viewing gallery. The climb is long and narrow. From the top, the view takes in the whole old town and the wooded hills to the east. Climbing the tower is possible only from spring to autumn.

Hussite Museum
Inside the Gothic old town hall on the main square, the museum covers the reform movement that built the town. A separate tour leads down into the underground passages, about half a kilometre of cellars kept cool all year, so a jacket helps. From October to March it opens Wednesday to Saturday only.

Kotnov
Only a round tower and stretches of wall remain of this castle on a bluff over the Lužnice at the south-west corner of the old town. The tower can be climbed for a view over the roofs and the river bend. Next to it, the Bechyně Gate holds a small exhibition on medieval life. Both open mainly between April and October, with shorter hours at either end.

Kozí Hrádek
In fields a few kilometres south-east of town, low walls and a rebuilt tower mark the small castle where the reformer Jan Hus preached in exile. A marked path and cycle route lead out from Tábor through farmland and woods. Field tracks turn muddy after rain, so sturdy shoes help.

Žižka Square
Gabled houses and the old town hall surround this sloping square, where a statue of the Hussite general Jan Žižka stands near two stone tables once used for open-air communion. Lanes leave it in a deliberate tangle meant to confuse attackers. It is also the starting point for the tunnel tours.
