Things to do

Aleš South Bohemian Gallery
Inside the château's former riding hall, the regional art gallery shows Gothic panel paintings and wooden sculpture taken from South Bohemian churches. Upper rooms hold changing exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. The hall stands at the château gate, which makes it an easy pairing with a tour. It is open daily.

Hluboká Castle
Rebuilt in the nineteenth century in English Tudor Gothic, the château holds carved wood panelling, tapestries and an armoury across a run of state rooms. Interiors are seen on guided tours only, and the château stays open through winter on a shorter route. A landscaped park of meadows and old trees surrounds it and is free to walk.

Ohrada Hunting Lodge
Across a fishpond from the main château, a baroque hunting lodge holds a museum of forestry, hunting and fish farming. Rooms are hung with antlers and carved furniture, and one section covers the carp ponds of the region. It opens from April to October, daily in July and August and at weekends only in April and October.

Zoo Hluboká
Laid out in woodland beside the Ohrada lodge, this zoo concentrates on native and European animals, including lynx, otters and birds of prey. Paths are mostly flat and shaded, which suits small children. It opens all year with shorter hours in winter, and its car park fills early on summer weekends.
