Things to do
6-
Charles Square
Paved across more than two hectares, the main square is lined with burgher houses, including the sgraffito covered Black House and the Painted House. A town tower near one corner can be climbed for a view over both UNESCO monuments. Markets and summer festivals use the open space. The Jewish quarter is a ten minute walk north across the river.
-
Jewish Cemetery
Uphill from the quarter, about eleven thousand burials spread across a wooded slope, with stones dating from the seventeenth century onward. A ceremonial hall stands at the entrance. Paths are steep and uneven. Hours change with the season, and guided visits do not run on Saturdays.
-
Jewish Quarter
Across the river from the basilica, more than a hundred houses of the former Jewish quarter survive along narrow lanes and covered passages cut into the hillside. Two synagogues, a town hall and a rabbi's house still stand. Plaques mark the main buildings, so the lanes work as a self guided walk. Guided tours need booking two days ahead.
-
Rear Synagogue
Painted Hebrew inscriptions and floral decoration from the early eighteenth century cover the walls of this restored synagogue at the top of the quarter. A model shows the quarter as it stood in the mid nineteenth century. The ticket also covers the Seligmann Bauer house nearby, furnished as a Jewish family home. It opens daily all year, with tickets sold at the information desk inside.
-
St Procopius Basilica
Built as the abbey church of a Benedictine monastery, this basilica mixes late Romanesque and early Gothic forms, with a rose window and a crypt of slender columns. Visits are by guided tour only, roughly hourly, from a ticket office in the château forecourt. Tours run for groups of two or more and may be cancelled for services. On Friday afternoons the nave opens freely.
-
Třebíč Castle
Rebuilt from the Benedictine monastery beside the basilica, this château holds the Vysočina Museum. Its rooms cover the region's carved nativity scenes, a large collection of tobacco pipes and a reconstructed monastic interior. The courtyard and terrace overlook the river and the Jewish quarter. Closed Mondays.
