Things to do in Liberec

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Liberec

A hyperboloid hotel and television tower on the summit of Ještěd, a thousand metres up, is visible from almost every street of this northern city. Below it sit a neo Renaissance town hall, textile magnates' villas and the trailheads of the Jizera Mountains. Buses from Prague take about an hour and a quarter. Tram 3 runs to Horní Hanychov at the foot of Ještěd, and a road climbs to the top. Two days cover the city, the tower and a walk on the ridge.

Things to do

6
  1. Galerie Lázně

    Gallery · 1.5 hr

Housed in a former municipal bathhouse with a tiled pool hall and ornate facade, the regional gallery shows Dutch and Flemish painting alongside Czech art. The old pool has become an exhibition space for temporary shows. It sits a short walk from the town hall. The gallery closes on Mondays.

  2. IQLANDIA

    Museum · 3 hr

Hands on exhibits fill several floors of this science centre, from weather and the human body to engineering and a planetarium dome. A humanoid robot greets arrivals in the lobby. Families should allow at least half a day. Tickets are timed on busy holiday dates, so book ahead in school breaks.

  3. Ještěd Ridge

    Viewpoint · 4 hr

Stretching southwest from the summit, this wooded ridge carries the marked Ještědská hřebenovka trail past rock outcrops and open lookouts. Sections can be walked from Horní Hanychov or from the top, with buses back from villages on either side. In winter the slopes below the tower hold ski runs and the ski jumps above Horní Hanychov.

  4. Ještěd Tower

    Tower · 2 hr

Karel Hubáček's hotel and transmitter, finished in 1973, crowns the summit with a silver cone shaped to shed wind and ice. Inside, the restaurant and rooms have been restored to their original 1970s design. The terrace views reach the Jizera and Giant Mountains. The region bought the building in 2026 and plans a long restoration, while the hotel and restaurant stay open daily.

  5. Liberec City Hall

    Landmark · 1 hr

Built in the 1890s on the model of Vienna's city hall, this neo Renaissance building closes the main square with a tall tower and painted gables. Guided tours take in the ceremonial hall and its stained glass and, in good weather, the tower gallery. Tickets are sold at the information centre on the ground floor. Tours run daily in summer and on Thursdays in the off season.

  6. Liberec Zoo

    Park · 2.5 hr

Opened in 1919, this hillside zoo is the oldest in the Czech lands and sits beside the botanic garden, a short tram ride from the centre. Paths climb between enclosures under old trees, so sturdy shoes help. A day ticket covers the full site, and it opens every day of the year.
