Things to do in Davos

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Davos

The highest town in Europe at 1,560 metres, which is why it filled with tuberculosis sanatoria in the nineteenth century and why Thomas Mann set The Magic Mountain here. The long straight main street is the shape those buildings left behind. It is a working town rather than a pretty one, and it earns its place on skis, on the Parsenn, and in summer on the trails above the Zugerbergsee. The World Economic Forum meets here in January.

  1. Kirchner Museum

    Kirchner Museum

    Museum · 1.5 hr

A glass building holding the largest collection of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, who came here in 1917 after a breakdown and stayed until his death in 1938, and whose mountain work is nothing like the Berlin street scenes he is known for.

  2. Lake Davos

    Lake Davos

    Lake · 1.5 hr

The lake at the north end of the town, warm enough to swim in for a few weeks in high summer at this altitude, with a flat path around it of about an hour. It freezes hard enough for skating in a cold January.

  3. Jakobshorn

    Viewpoint · 2.5 hr

The mountain on the sunny side of the valley at 2,590 metres, facing the Parsenn across it, which is why the view from one is of the other. It is the snowboarders' hill in winter and the paragliding launch in summer.

  4. Parsenn

    Viewpoint · 3 hr

The ski mountain above the town, reached by a funicular of 1931 to Weissfluhjoch at 2,662 metres, with the Weissfluhgipfel cable car above it. The run down to Kublis is twelve kilometres and drops more than two thousand metres, which is the longest in the Alps outside a glacier.

  5. Schatzalp

    Landmark · 2 hr

The sanatorium of 1900 above the town that Thomas Mann used as the setting for The Magic Mountain, reached by its own funicular and working as a hotel since 1954. The alpine botanical garden beside it holds about five thousand species.
