Things to do in Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is a village on the floor of a glacial trough in the Bernese Oberland, wedged between vertical limestone walls that rise more than three hundred metres on either side. Seventy-two waterfalls are counted off its walls across the year, the tallest of them the free-falling Staubbach, and the sound of falling water is the constant background to the place. It is the rail and road gateway to the car-free villages above it, Wengen on the eastern shelf and Mürren on the western, and to the Jungfrau region beyond. The village itself is small, a single main street with a church, a museum and a station, and most visitors use it as a base rather than a destination.
