Things to do in Mürren

Mürren sits on a terrace at about 1,650 metres on the western wall of the Lauterbrunnen valley, directly opposite the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It has been car-free since the first railway reached it in 1891 and is reached only by cableway, either the Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp cable car and the panorama railway along the shelf, or the cable car from Stechelberg. The village is the valley station for the Schilthorn and the birthplace of modern downhill ski racing, where Arnold Lunn set the first slalom in 1922 and founded the Kandahar club. Its scale is deliberately small, a few hundred permanent residents on two lanes with the whole Jungfrau massif across the gap.
