Things to do in Sion

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Sion

The capital of the Valais, built between two rock hills in the widest part of the Rhone valley, each hill carrying a castle. It is the driest town in Switzerland and the vineyards run up the slopes on both sides of it. Most people pass through on the way to the side valleys, which is a mistake: the church on Valere holds a playable organ of about 1435, the oldest anywhere, and the old town below is intact.

Things to do

5
  1. Basilique de Valere

    Church · 1.5 hr

A fortified church on the higher of the town's two hills, walled like a castle because it was one, holding an organ of about 1435 that is the oldest in the world still played. Concerts run through the summer and the climb takes twenty minutes.

  2. Bisse de Clavau

    Landmark · 2.5 hr

An irrigation channel of 1453 cut along the cliff above the Rhone east of the town, with a path beside it running through the steepest vineyards in the canton to Saint-Leonard. The bisses are how the dry side of the Valais was farmed and about two hundred kilometres of them still run.

  3. Chateau de Tourbillon

    Castle · 1 hr

The bishops' castle on the second hill, built at the end of the thirteenth century and burnt in 1788, left as a ruin with its curtain wall and chapel frescoes standing. It is a steeper climb than Valere and the reward is the two hills seen against each other.

  4. Lac Souterrain de Saint-Leonard

    Lake · 1 hr

The largest navigable underground lake in Europe, three hundred metres long in a cavern of gypsum and marble, crossed by rowing boat with a guide. It was drained by an earthquake in 1946 and refilled. Ten minutes east of the town.

  5. Musee d'histoire du Valais

    Museum · 1.5 hr

The canton's history museum inside the Valere hill's fortifications, running from the neolithic to the present in the rooms of the old chapter house. It is the best account anywhere of how a mountain canton fed itself.
