Things to do in Cogne

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Cogne

A village at the head of a valley inside the Gran Paradiso park, an iron-mining town until 1979 and now one of the recognised capitals of ice climbing. The frozen waterfalls above it draw climbers from across Europe between December and March.

3
  1. Cascate di Lillaz

    Waterfall · 1.5 hr

A three-stage waterfall a short walk above the hamlet of Lillaz, an easy path in summer and a serious ice route in winter. It is the best known of the Cogne ice lines.

  2. Viewpoint

    Gran Paradiso

    Viewpoint · 10 hr

At 4,061 metres the only four-thousander entirely inside Italy, and the standard first big alpine summit because the route is glaciated but not technical. It is done over two days from a hut with rope, axe and crampons.

  3. Valnontey

    Viewpoint · 4 hr

The valley running south from Cogne into the heart of the park, walled by glaciers and holding the alpine botanical garden at Paradisia. Ibex and chamois are reliably visible on the slopes above the path.
