Mount Etna
The highest active volcano in Europe at around 3,350 metres, and the height changes with each eruption. The summit craters can only be reached with a licensed alpine guide, and the authorities close the last section whenever activity picks up, which is often.

Grotta del Gelo
A lava tube on the northern flank holding perennial ice, the southernmost glacier-like body in Europe. Reaching it is a demanding walk of about eighteen kilometres from Piano Provenzana.

Valle del Bove
A collapse scar five kilometres wide on Etna's eastern flank, where most recent lava flows have poured. Crossing its floor is a long day on broken rock with no shade and no water.
