Things to do in Ravello

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Ravello

Three hundred and fifty metres above the sea on a shelf between two valleys, Ravello trades the beach for gardens and long views. Wagner, Gore Vidal and a summer music festival all followed the same terraces.

  1. Ravello Cathedral

    Ravello Cathedral

    Cathedral · 30 min

An eleventh-century church on the main square, holding two carved marble pulpits and a set of bronze doors cast in Constantinople. The small museum in the crypt is included.

  2. Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer

    Landmark · 30 min

A white concrete wave with a single round window, finished in 2010 to a design Niemeyer completed in his nineties. It sits in deliberate argument with everything around it and is worth seeing for that alone.

  3. Caruso, A Belmond Hotel

    Hotel

An eleventh-century palace on the highest terrace in Ravello, with an infinity pool that appears to spill into the sea three hundred metres below. Its garden survives from the original villa.

  4. Palazzo Avino

    Hotel

A twelfth-century patrician villa in pink stucco on Ravello's main lane, with a beach club reached by shuttle far below. The terrace bar is the standard place to watch the light go off the gulf.

  5. Villa Cimbrone

    Garden · 1.5 hr

The Terrace of Infinity at the end of the garden is a balustrade lined with marble busts and open sea on three sides, and it is the single most photographed viewpoint on the coast. The walk out from Ravello's square takes about fifteen minutes on lanes.

  6. Villa Rufolo

    Palace · 1.5 hr

A thirteenth-century merchant's house with a Moorish cloister and terraced gardens looking straight down the Gulf of Salerno. Wagner found the setting for Klingsor's garden here, and the summer concert festival still stages performances on a platform over the drop.
