Things to do in Gura Humorului

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Gura Humorului

A small town where the Humor meets the Moldova, and the best placed base for the painted monasteries: Voroneț is four kilometres away and Humor five, in opposite directions. Both can be done on foot from the town in a day. The churches were painted on the outside between about 1487 and 1596, which was a way of teaching a congregation that stood in the churchyard rather than inside. Eight of them are on the UNESCO list and the frescoes have survived five centuries of Carpathian weather.

  1. Humor Monastery

    Monastery · 1.5 hr

A church of 1530 painted in 1535, on the UNESCO list, with a reddish ground rather than Voroneț's blue and an open porch that lets weather onto the paint. The siege of Constantinople on the south wall is dressed as a sixteenth century battle.

  2. Moldovița Monastery

    Monastery · 1.5 hr

A fortified monastery of 1532 with painting of 1537, on the UNESCO list, holding the best preserved siege of Constantinople of the group and a throne left by Petru Rareș. It is twenty six kilometres over a low pass.

  3. Voroneț Monastery

    Monastery · 1.5 hr

The church of 1488, painted outside in 1547, whose Last Judgement covers the entire west wall against a blue so particular that the colour carries the monastery's name. It is on the UNESCO list and it is the one everybody sees.
