Things to do in Horezu

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Horezu

A pottery town under the Căpățânii mountains whose kilns have worked for three hundred years, using a cow horn and a needle to draw the cockerel that is the local signature. The craft is on the UNESCO intangible list. The monastery three kilometres away is the largest and most complete Brâncovenesc ensemble anywhere, built between 1690 and 1697. Between the pots and the monastery the town holds two UNESCO listings for a population of six thousand.

  1. Bistrița Monastery

    Monastery · 1.5 hr

A monastery founded in 1494 with a cave chapel in the cliff behind it reached by a stair, holding the relics of Saint Gregory the Decapolite. It ran one of the earliest presses in Wallachia.

  2. Horezu Monastery

    Monastery · 2 hr

The largest monastic complex of the Brâncovenesc style, founded in 1690, on the UNESCO list, with a carved stone porch, a painted refectory and a school of fresco painting that trained the region. Its balance of Byzantine plan and Renaissance ornament is the style's definition.

  3. Trovanți Museum

    Landmark · 1 hr

An open air reserve at Costești holding trovants, sandstone concretions that swell after rain and appear to grow, which is a cementation process rather than the local legend of living stones.
