Things to do in Tulcea

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Tulcea

The port where the Danube splits into its three arms and the only practical way into the delta. Everything downstream of here is reached by boat, and the town exists to sell that passage. The delta itself is the best preserved river delta in Europe, a UNESCO biosphere reserve of about 580,000 hectares carrying some three hundred bird species. The town is a working harbour rather than a resort, and the trip is what is being bought.

Things to do

5
  1. Danube Delta

    Waterfront · 8 hr

The second largest river delta in Europe and the best preserved, about 580,000 hectares of channels, reed islands and lakes on the UNESCO list since 1991, holding roughly three hundred bird species including the largest pelican colonies on the continent. It is reached only by boat and the water is the road.

  2. Delta Nature Resort

    Hotel

A villa resort on a hill over the Somova lakes west of the port, with its own boats into the delta, and the only address on this edge of the reserve built to that standard.

  3. Enisala Fortress

    Fortress · 1.5 hr

A fourteenth century Genoese and later Ottoman fortress on a limestone crag above the Razim lagoon, thirty five kilometres south, watching a shoreline that has since silted up and left it inland. It is walked freely and the view over the lagoons is the reason.

  4. Letea Forest

    Park · 4 hr

A strict reserve on a sand dune ridge in the northern delta, holding oaks hung with liana and one of Europe's last free-roaming horse populations. Access is with a licensed guide and permit only.

  5. Tulcea Art Museum

    Museum · 1 hr

A collection of Romanian painting in a nineteenth century building on the waterfront, strong on the interwar artists who worked in the delta and in the Dobrogea. It is the town's one indoor hour.
