Ninety seconds on Vama Veche
The last village before the Bulgarian border, which was a writers' and students' hideout under communism because it was too close to the frontier to be developed. It kept a reputation for anarchy that the campsites and bars now sell. It is still the only stretch of the coast where the beach runs straight into the village with no promenade in between. Out of season it empties completely and the cliffs south of it are the quietest walking on the Romanian shore.
A labyrinth of about four kilometres of passage seven kilometres inland, partly cut by hand, with Getic and later material found inside. It is gated and entered only with a guide.
The beach at the fishing village two kilometres north, wider and quieter than its neighbour, with fishing boats pulled up at the southern end.
