Things to do in Cârțișoara

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Cârțișoara

A village at the northern foot of the Făgăraș mountains and the start of the Transfăgărășan, which climbs from here to just over 2,000 metres and drops into Wallachia on the far side. The road is shut by snow for most of the year. The village is small and the reason to be here is what is above it. Bâlea lake sits in a glacial cirque at 2,034 metres, reachable by cable car when the road is closed, and the highest summits in the country are along the ridge to the west.

  1. Bâlea Lake

    Bâlea Lake

    Lake · 1.5 hr

The car park at the top is small and fills by mid morning through the summer. Arriving before ten is the difference between a lake and a queue, and the weekend crush runs from about eleven until three.

  2. Transfăgărășan

    Transfăgărășan

    Viewpoint · 6.5 hr

The closure everyone quotes applies to one section, between the waterfall and Piscu Negru, and not to the whole road. Outside the summer window the drive is still on, it is simply shorter and stops below the snow line.

  3. Bâlea Waterfall

    Waterfall · 1 hr

The largest waterfall in the Făgăraș, dropping about 60 metres below the cable car station, with a marked path to its foot from the lower road. It is at its heaviest in June when the snow above is going.

  4. Cârța Monastery

    Monastery · 1 hr

The ruins of a Cistercian abbey founded about 1202, dissolved in 1474, with the choir still roofed and in use as the village Lutheran church and the nave standing open to the sky. It is the furthest east the order built.

  5. Moldoveanu Peak

    Viewpoint · 10 hr

The highest mountain in the country at 2,544 metres, on the Făgăraș ridge, reached on a long approach from the north or as part of the multi day ridge traverse. There is no lift and no shortcut.
