Ninety seconds on Piatra Neamț

A town in a bowl of hills where the Bistrița comes out of the mountains, with a cable car from the middle of the streets to a ridge at 650 metres. Stephen the Great's princely court and its bell tower stand in the centre. It is the western gate to the Ceahlău massif, the most storied mountain in Moldavia, and to the Bicaz reservoir. The gorge and Red Lake are about forty five minutes further west.

  1. Bistrița Monastery

    Monastery · 1 hr

    A monastery founded in 1402 by Alexander the Good, holding his tomb and an icon given by a Byzantine emperor, seven kilometres west of the town. It was a princely necropolis before Putna took the role.

  2. Ceahlău National Park

    Park · 7 hr

    A national park around the massif that dominates the Bistrița valley, rising to Ocolașul Mare at 1,907 metres, with the Toaca peak and Duruitoarea waterfall on the usual circuits. The mountain carries a heavy local mythology and a pilgrimage each August.

  3. Princely Court Bell Tower

    Tower · 30 min

    A bell tower of 1499 built by Stephen the Great beside his court church, still standing at nineteen metres with a clock added later. It is the oldest structure in the town and the climb is short.
