Ninety seconds on Sighetu Marmației

A border town on the Tisza looking across at Ukraine, and the place where the Romanian political class was destroyed. The prison in the middle of it held ministers, bishops and academics from 1948, and about fifty three of them died in it. It was also a Jewish town of some forty thousand people before 1944, and Elie Wiesel was born on one of its streets. The village museum on the hill above and the Maramureș valleys to the south are the other reason to be here.

  1. Maramureș Village Museum

    Museum · 2 hr

    An open air collection on the Dobăieș hill holding about thirty homesteads, two wooden churches and the gates and barns that go with them, moved from villages across the county. It is the compact version of what the valleys hold.

  2. Sighet Memorial

    Museum · 2.5 hr

    The former political prison, opened as a museum of the victims of communism in 1993, with each cell given to a subject and the names of about eight thousand dead cut into a wall in the courtyard. It is one of the most serious museums in the country and it is not quick.

  3. Sighet Synagogue

    Landmark · 30 min

    The one synagogue of eight left standing in a town that was more than a third Jewish before the deportations of May 1944. It is still in use by a very small community.
