Ninety seconds on Viscri

A single street of blue and ochre Saxon houses with a whitewashed fortified church at the end of it, six kilometres up an unpaved lane off the main road. Almost all the Saxons left after 1990 and the village was kept alive by restoration work rather than by tourism. King Charles bought a house here in 2006 and the village has been careful with the attention since. There is no supermarket, the lane is rough, and the day visitors leave before dark.

    The door is locked and the keyholder's telephone number is posted on it, which is the normal arrangement for a Saxon village church and the reason most people drive past this one without stopping.

  2. Rupea Fortress

    Fortress · 1.5 hr

    A basalt hill fortress nine kilometres away with three enclosures climbing the rock, restored in 2013 after standing as a ruin for two centuries. It commands the road between Brașov and Sighișoara.

    Hotel

    A Saxon farmhouse restored around its courtyard, barn and hay loft, with lime plaster, tiled stoves and a kitchen garden that supplies the table. It is the reason people stay in Viscri rather than pass through it.

    A Romanesque church of about 1100 that was fortified in the fifteenth century, whitewashed inside and out, with a bacon tower and a wall walk of rough boards. It is on the UNESCO list and the tower ladder is not for everyone.
